NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides specialized medical care for newborns who are premature, critically ill, or require intensive monitoring due to various health conditions. The primary functions of a NICU include:

1. Advanced Medical Support:

  • Respiratory Assistance: Utilizing ventilators and other respiratory devices to support babies with breathing difficulties.
  • Cardiac Monitoring: Continuous observation of heart rate and rhythm to detect and manage cardiac issues.
  • Nutritional Support: Administering intravenous nutrition or specialized feeding methods for infants unable to feed orally.

2. Specialized Care for Various Conditions:

  • Prematurity: Providing care for babies born before 37 weeks of gestation, addressing challenges related to underdeveloped organs.
  • Low Birth Weight: Monitoring and supporting infants with birth weights under 2,500 grams (5.5 pounds).
  • Infections and Birth Defects: Managing and treating newborns with congenital anomalies or infections requiring specialized interventions.

3. Multidisciplinary Team Approach:

  • A collaborative team comprising neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, and other specialists works together to provide comprehensive care.

4. Family-Centered Care:

  • Encouraging parental involvement in the care process, offering education on newborn care, and providing emotional support to families during the hospital stay.

The presence of an on-site NICU ensures that newborns requiring intensive medical attention receive immediate and specialized care, eliminating the need for transfers to other facilities and reducing stress for families.

In addition to the NICU there is also a Neonatal High Care Unit which serves as an intermediary level between the NICU and standard neonatal care. It is designed for infants who are stable but still require more intensive monitoring and care than provided in a regular nursery.

Services Provided:

  • Continuous monitoring of vital signs.
  • Administration of intravenous medications.
  • Support for feeding and growth until the infant is ready for discharge.
The presence of a NICU and a Neonatal High Care unit ensures
    a continuum of Care:
Infants may transition from the NICU to the Neonatal High Care Unit as their condition stabilizes, allowing for a step-down approach in care intensity.
  • Resource Allocation: This tiered system ensures that resources are utilized efficiently, with the most critical cases receiving intensive care in the NICU, while those on the path to recovery are managed in the High Care Unit.
This structured approach ensures that each newborn receives care tailored to their specific medical needs, promoting optimal outcomes during their hospital stay.

PREGNANCY ULTRASOUND SCANS (SONARS)

We have radiological services on-site offered by Dr Fynn and we also make external referrals to other diagnostic centres.
Importance of Pregnancy Ultrasounds:

1. Confirming Pregnancy and Estimating Gestational Age:

• Early ultrasounds help confirm the presence of a viable pregnancy and accurately determine gestational age, which is crucial for planning appropriate prenatal care.

2. Monitoring Fetal Development:

• Regular ultrasounds assess fetal growth, ensuring the baby is developing appropriately and identifying any potential growth restrictions.

3. Detecting Congenital Anomalies:

• Mid-pregnancy ultrasounds can identify structural abnormalities, allowing for early intervention or planning for necessary medical care after birth.

4. Assessing Placental Position and Function:

• Ultrasounds determine the placenta’s location, ensuring it is not obstructing the birth canal, and evaluate its function to ensure adequate fetal nourishment.

5. Evaluating Amniotic Fluid Levels:

• Monitoring amniotic fluid levels helps identify conditions like oligohydramnios (low fluid) or polyhydramnios (high fluid), which can affect pregnancy outcomes.

6. Guiding Prenatal Testing and Procedures:

• Ultrasound imaging assists in procedures such as amniocentesis, ensuring safe and accurate sampling.

7. Determining Fetal Position:

• Late-pregnancy ultrasounds ascertain the baby’s position, aiding in delivery planning, especially if the baby is breech.
Regular ultrasounds are a standard component of prenatal care, providing valuable information to healthcare providers and expectant parents, thereby promoting a healthy pregnancy and timely interventions when necessary.
